The Segments Page

A segment is a group of shoppers who share something in common, such as “New Visitors”, “Shoppers from the US” or “People with more than $100 in their cart”. Once you have a segment, you can show those shoppers their own version of an asset: different products, different messaging, or a different asset altogether.

The Segments page in the left menu is where all your segments live.

  • The segment list on the left. Use the search box to find a segment by its name, or by the name of an asset it is used in.
  • Filters above the list:
    • All: every segment.
    • Asset: segments used to personalize assets.
    • AB: segments used to target A/B tests.
    • Unlinked Asset and Unlinked AB: segments that are not used anywhere yet. Handy for cleaning up.
  • Tags: add your own tags to a segment (for example “Holiday” or “VIP”), then filter the list by tag.
  • Segment details on the right. Click a segment to see its name, type, conditions, page conditions and the assets it is linked to. Click the edit icon to change it.
  1. Go to Segments in the left menu and click Create.
  2. Choose how to start:
    • New segment: build your own from scratch.
    • Saved segment: start from a segment you already made.
    • Klaviyo campaign: build a segment from your Klaviyo campaigns and flows (connect Klaviyo first in Settings > Integrations).
    • Or pick one of the ready-made segments under Top popular segment for you, such as New Visitors, Returning Visitors, Paying Customers, Heavy Spenders or Members.
  3. Give the segment a name, add one or more conditions, and save.

You can also ask Dia. Open the chat in your Dialogue dashboard and describe the group, for example “create a segment for returning visitors from Canada”.

Each condition is a simple sentence, like “Number Of Visits is lower than 2”. You can combine several conditions in one segment.

  • Visit history: Number Of Visits, Days From Last Visit, Page Views Per Session. Use these to tell first-time visitors from returning ones.
  • Purchase history: Days from last order, Visitor Aov (how much this shopper usually spends, compared to your store’s average), Number Of Transactions and Order complete.
  • Traffic source: UTM, to target shoppers who arrived from a specific campaign link. Paste the campaign link and Dialogue fills in the UTM Campaign, UTM Medium and UTM ID for you.
  • Location: Visitor Geo, to target shoppers by country.
  • Device: Device type, to target mobile, tablet or desktop shoppers.
  • Language: Locale, to show content in the shopper’s store language (available on Shopify).
  • Timing: Time Of Day, Day Of Week and Date, for example to show a banner only on weekends or only after a launch date.
  • Membership: Member, to target logged-in members or guests.
  • Cart Value: the total value of the cart. You can compare it to a fixed amount or to your free shipping threshold.
  • Cart Products, Cart Products Number, Cart Products Quantity: which products are in the cart and how many.
  • Cart Products Collections and Cart Products Features: the collections or tags of the products in the cart.

Page conditions sit in the Pages part of a segment:

  • Page Path and Page Query: target pages whose address contains (or does not contain) some text.
  • Category: target specific collection pages.
  • Product Category, Product Features, SKU and Variant: target specific product pages.
  • Market: target a Shopify Market, so shoppers in each market can see their own version.
  • Klaviyo campaigns and flows: shoppers who arrived from a specific Klaviyo campaign or flow. Start from Klaviyo campaign when you create the segment.
  • Membership (Yotpo): target shoppers by their Yotpo loyalty status: Member, Balance, Earned, Tier name and Purchases made. Connect Yotpo first in Settings > Integrations.

When you click a segment, its Insights show how its linked assets performed: Direct Sales, Views, Clicks and CTR. Use the date picker to change the period, and open More insights for a breakdown by asset.

To compare segments, tick two or more segments in the list. The right side switches to Comparing segments, with Direct Sales, Views, Clicks, Qty, CTR and CVR side by side.

Tick the segments you no longer need and click DELETE, or delete a single segment from its row. Deleting cannot be undone. The default All Visitors segment cannot be deleted.

Segments do their work inside your assets. Open an asset, go to the Behavior tab, and add a behavior for your segment. Each behavior has four parts: Audience (who), Pages (where), Products Display (which products) and Messaging (what text). Learn more in Become a (1-Click) Segmentation Hero.
